Joël Camathias and Andrea Bertolini take 4th in weather affected, shortened 2013 ELMS Opener

JMW Motorsport opened their 2013 ELMS account with a solid points finish in the opening round held at their home circuit of Silverstone. With new drivers Joël Camathias and Andrea Bertolini behind the wheel, it was to be a race thwarted by poor conditions.

The weekend’s event started with overcast sides and the team taking 5th on the LMGTE grid with just over half a second bettwen them and pole, which highlighted a close class battle lay ahead. By the green flag it was clear the biggest opposition to everyone was not so much on the track as above it, with the skies full of rain. From the go there were spinners and offs, as the treacherous track conditions made their presence felt. However, the JMW Motorsport Ferrari 458, was driving as on rails thanks to sturdy ‘wet boots’. As the only Dunlop shod car in the LMGTE class, the new and innovative wet weather Dunlops were performing superbly.

At the halfway mark of the 3 Hour race, the safety car was deployed as the rain was showing no signs of relenting and many cars struggled in the conditions. With 40 minutes left to run, the race directors took the decision to red flag the race, with JMW Motorsport running in 4th. But, as a competitor noted in a TV interview, whilst others struggled, those on Dunlops would appear to be carrying on with relative ease given the conditions.

So whilst disappointed not to give the wet Dunlops a longer run, the team could be satisfied with a solid start which bodes well for the future races and perhaps JMW Motorsport will be one team who won’t mind a spot of rain this summer!

The second race of the ELMS Championship takes place at Imola (Italy), 17-18 May.
